Search Engine Land’s Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors:
Earlier this month Search Engine Land released the latest version of their Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors. This is the third edition since the original table was released in 2011.
What is the Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors?
Search Engine Land has designed the table to help new or experienced webmasters focus on the fundamentals that are required to successfully optimize their sites for the search engines. There has been a number of changes since the previous edition and 3 new elements have been introduced (vertical search, direct answers, and HTTPS).
The table covers two classes of factors, each of which contains several categories.
- Content (the content and quality of material).
- Architecture (overall site functionality).
- HTML (factors specific to web pages).
- Trust (how trustworthy & authoritative a site appears to be).
- Links (how links impact rankings).
- Personal (how personalized search results affect rankings).
- Social (how social recommendations influence rankings).
All together the table provides 37 individual factors (shown below).
How to Use the SEO Table
Close inspection reveals each factor has a two-letter symbol and a weight. The first letter of the symbols represents the factor’s category. The second letter represents the individual element. So Content Quality, Content Research, and Content Words are represented by Cq, Cr, and Cw respectively. Factor weight provides a guide to the factor’s importance, with “+3” factors being the most important.
Don’t Fall Behind the SEO Curve!
The many changes to this table show how much SEO requirements can change over a 12-month period. And as I preach in my own social media and search optimization courses, you can no longer afford to separate search and social media optimization. This handy table can help you stay abreast of the most important factors for optimizing your entire online presence.
To get the most from the table, you would do well to use it in conjunction with Search Engine Land’s Guide to SEO, which has also been updated.
